Describing art as “the rhythm of my soul,” Guyanese artist Felicia Maxwell, now based in Miami, uses her paintings to capture the breathtaking beauty of nature and the human spirit. Her journey as a painter began four years ago, but the seeds of this passion were planted in her childhood.

“I was that little girl who couldn’t resist drawing on the covers of her schoolbooks or turning the palms of my hands into miniature canvases, adorned with delicate flowers and graceful butterflies. Even then, I knew this gift was something divine, a talent lovingly placed in my hands by God.”

In 2020, as a stay-at-home mom, Felicia began painting as an outlet for personal fulfillment. Despite feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, she shared her very first painting on Facebook, and the response was overwhelming. “The likes, comments, and words of encouragement poured in like a flood, and for the first time, I felt the world validating what I had always known in my heart—this was my calling!”

Painting became my sanctuary—a place where I could pour out my heart, celebrate life’s beauty, and express emotions too deep for words. But it wasn’t until 2022, when she lost her beloved mother, that her art became her lifeline. “Her passing shattered my world, leaving me in a sea of grief. Yet, it was in the act of painting that she found solace. Each brushstroke felt like a conversation with her, a way to keep her spirit alive. Her final words to me, ‘Never stop painting’, became my mantra, propelling me forward even in my darkest days.”

What started as a simple hobby had blossomed into a thriving business. From selling paintings along the beaches of Miami, Felicia now sees her work displayed in luxury hotels, million-dollar condos, schools, restaurants, salons, and barbershops. Each painting tells a story—from vibrant sunsets and playful turtles to serene dolphins and scripture-inspired verses that uplift the soul. Felicia’s work has touched the hearts of countless people, including tourists who often buy multiple pieces, carrying her vision into their homes.

“One moment that deeply touched me was a recent encounter with a tourist battling cancer. She purchased a sunset painting and told me it gave her a sense of hope and she was overwhelmed with emotions. Moments like these remind me why I paint—not just for the beauty of the art but for the connection, the healing, and the joy it brings to others.”

Holiday Picks

As the holidays approach, Felicia’s customers are especially drawn to my cheerful works—sunsets, flowers, and vibrant colors that evoke feelings of hope and joy. Her customers lovingly call them “happy paintings,” and she couldn’t agree more. These pieces embody warmth, love, and a sense of togetherness, elements that make the Christmas season special.

“Art has been my refuge, my healer, and my way of giving back to the world. Every piece I create carries a part of me—my love, my faith, and my mother’s enduring legacy. And as long as I can hold a brush, I will continue painting, sharing this gift with all who seek a touch of beauty and hope.”
