BARBADOS— A sea of red washed over Barbados’ streets this morning as scores of locals participated in the final leg of the Red Foundation’s ‘Walk the Talk’ charity initiative.
Donning branded red t-shirts, supporters commenced the charity walk at 6 a.m. from the Premium Seafoods Store Carpark in Lancaster, St. James, and made their way to Daryll Jordan Secondary School in St. Lucy.
During the fourth annual event, Red Foundation founder, Cultural Ambassador, Dr. The Most Honourable Stedson ‘Red Plastic Bag‘ Wiltshire, lauded the immense response that the fundraising event has garnered each year, noting that this helps achieve its core mission to help Barbadians in need.
Dr. Wiltshire, also known as music legend ‘RPB’, emphasized the crucial need for continued support and volunteer involvement. “…I thought it was important that I contribute to the community that has supported me. This walk is all about raising funds and getting donations to support people in need, especially around Christmas,” he said, while encouraging Barbadians to come forward to assist with packaging and distributing goods for the foundation’s community outreach programs set for December.
The foundation has set a fundraising goal of BBD $75,000, with proceeds going towards providing much-needed aid. RPB noted that while today’s walk may be over, the work continues; He noted that volunteers are still needed to assist with the foundation’s efforts, including packaging and distributing essential goods.
“It’s a lot of work,” RPB explained. “We have a storeroom, and all hands are on deck, putting hampers together. We identify the people who need them, and then the distribution begins. It’s a tedious process, but we do it because we believe in lifting up our brothers and sisters.”
During an address presented at the school site, Wiltshire received the Citizen of the Year award from Kiwanis Club Bridgetown and was praised for his ongoing dedication to community service and the profound impact of his work through the Red Foundation.
Commenting on the event’s support and turnout, RPB said, “It’s a wonderful feeling to see people walking the talk. It shows that there are those who want to contribute and help, and I thank them for coming.”
Today’s charity walk followed three earlier phases that began on September 8th, and saw participants walking from Xtreme Body Mechanix Fitness Centre, East Point to the Barbados Concorde Experience.
